The promotion of British values is a key part of our approach to life here at Two Mile Hill Primary.
British values are defined by the Department of Education as having 5 different elements:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
Our community embeds these values through every aspect of school life, including our weekly assemblies, our PSHE curriculum and staff training. We bring these to life by linking them to our RICHER values. We also ensure British Values are upheld in the following specific ways:
Democracy
Children agree to uphold and respect the school rules and are actively encouraged to discuss what these mean and the importance of them.
We teach pupils how they can influence decision making through the democratic processes of our country, including holding school council elections each year.
The Rule of Law
Children are expected to adhere to our “three shows”. These rules are discussed in depth at the beginning of each school year and form the backbone of all that we do here.
Conversations regarding behaviour are always underpinned by discussions of the three shows, so children know how important following the rules is.
The importance of rules and laws, whether they be those that govern our school or our country, are referred to and reinforced often, such as in assemblies and when reflecting on behaviour.
Pupils are taught to value and understand the reasons behind the laws and rules; both within school and in wider society. Children who consistently follow our rules are celebrated and recognised in line with our behaviour policy.
We aim to provide children with an understanding of the importance of the Rule of Law that will aid them in both their life outside of school and in their future adult life.
Individual Liberty
We promote children’s freedom of choice and encourage them to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence, seeing this as key to their success in the world beyond primary school. Our playtimes are essential in developing these skills in our children and our double Platinum OPAL award demonstrates that this is highly effective.
We allow children to make safe choices by supporting and empowering them through education. Children are encouraged to hold and express their own thoughts and beliefs in a respectful and considered manner.
We teach children about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and allow time to reflect on what impact this has on their lives.
We challenge stereotypes in all parts of our school community and have a strong anti-bullying culture.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
All our school policies, upheld by all members of the community, promote respect, responsibility for one’s behaviour in line with our RICHER values.
Whole school assemblies focus on showing these values through their sensitive coverage of various topics based on high quality children’s literature.
We are committed to promoting respect for equality, diversity through our curriculum and consistently included new learning about different cultures and religions.
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and welcoming environment. We ensure that all members of the school community who hold protected characteristics, whether children, staff or parents have been considered and the challenges they may face have been mitigated as far as we are able.
Our RWV curriculum covers all the major world religions and children are introduced to faith as being a way of seeing and explaining the world. We stress the similarities between humans, regardless of religion, rather than see religion as a difference.
Our curriculum ensures coverage of key figures from historical and geographical contexts and where possible we ensure that we explore positive role models who hold Protected Characteristics.
